Panoramic and CBCT

Information regarding indications and radiation doses when using CS 8100 (Panoramic and CBCT) at Tandlægerne Classensgade

Indications for X-ray Examination

The need for images is always assessed by dentists at the clinic in terms of the indication for X-ray examination and the recommended type of imaging.

Indications for panoramic imaging:

  • Overview imaging of teeth and jaws as a supplement to clinical examination in connection with treatment planning.
  • Preliminary examination in connection with implant treatment (extent and course of anatomical structures, especially maxillary sinus and mandibular canal).
  • Evaluation of impacted wisdom teeth (position, relation to mandibular canal, and any pathological conditions such as resorptions and cyst development).
  • Larger pathological changes such as cysts and tumors that cannot be fully revealed by intraoral images.
  • Verification of developmental anomalies (e.g. ectopically positioned teeth).
  • Evaluation of tooth germs and as a supplement to clinical examination in connection with orthodontic treatment planning.
  • Changes located outside the areas that can be revealed using intraoral films.
  • Alternative to intraoral images in patients who cannot open their mouths sufficiently for intraoral image receptor placement or have pronounced gag reflex.
  • Guiding image for fracture diagnostics (of jaws and facial skeleton).
  • Overview image from which areas can be selected for more detailed examination.

Below are the estimated effective radiation doses. For comparison, the average dose from background radiation in Denmark is 8 µSv/day.

Intraoral exposure (1 image): 1-5 µSv. Panoramic exposure: 6-29 µSv (Carestream CS8100).

Cone Beam CT*: 5-72 µSv** (Carestream CS8100).

*Dose depends on the size of the radiation field/volume and the resolution. The smallest possible volume size for the indication should be used.

**According to the “Radiation Dosage Chart for CS8100 3D Family”
