Dental Anxiety

At Tandlægerne Classensgade, we will always warmly welcome you. We understand that many do not find it particularly enjoyable to visit the dentist. If you suffer from dental anxiety, we take it seriously when you tell us that you do not like being at the dentist. In such situations, it is important that things do not move faster than you can keep up with. Therefore, it is very important for us to have good communication throughout all parts of the visit.

Dentist with a special focus on dental anxiety

Fear of dentists is a form of anxiety on par with other phobias, and the Latin term is odontophobia. We take it very seriously when patients talk about their anxiety regarding dental visits. If you are a new patient with us, we take the time during your first visit to hear about your previous experiences with dentists. We do this because it gives us an understanding of what you have been through.

Perhaps we can also find out what specifically triggers your dental anxiety. Some have had a bad experience as a child at the dentist or have undergone a particularly uncomfortable treatment. If you know that it is specifically the sound of a certain instrument or, for example, lying completely back in the dental chair that gives you anxiety, it is a good idea to let us know. This way, we can do everything possible to avoid these trigger points, so we expose you to as little discomfort as possible.

Long time since your last dental visit?

Many patients with anxiety rarely visit the dentist and often only seek help when something hurts. Sometimes it is a wisdom tooth that causes pain or just discomfort. There may be a tooth with a large cavity that has been allowed to develop so that it now hurts and may need to be root treated.

Even picking up the phone and calling the dentist can be overwhelming. If you feel more comfortable with us calling you, we are happy to do so. This way, we can have a conversation over the phone about what we can do to help you feel more secure. Many times, on top of the anxiety of going to the dentist, there is also a fear of how much needs to be done. Not least, the cost can be a factor that causes nervousness. We will always start with a check-up of your teeth to get an overview. If we find during the examination that there is something that requires treatment, we will work with you to find the solution that fits your teeth. We will find a solution that you can participate in - both financially and psychologically.

Always an estimate before treatment

We have a policy at the clinic to always inform our patients about the price of a given treatment before we begin. This applies regardless of the size of the treatment and the bill. That way, you can comfortably settle into the chair, knowing that you don’t have to worry about the price of the treatment.

Options for treatment with sedative medication or general anesthesia

If the treatment you need is very extensive, or if you feel very uncomfortable being at the dentist and have an urgent need for dental care, it is possible to administer various sedative medications that will help you get through the treatment. Perhaps your doctor can prescribe some sedative medication. If so, we would be happy to assist you in planning your treatment to align with the optimal effect of the medication.

If all other methods have been tried, there is also the option for you to undergo general anesthesia. In that case, we will have an anesthesiologist at the clinic who will handle this part of the treatment. Once you are under anesthesia, the dental treatment can be carried out. If you are interested in this type of treatment, you are very welcome to contact the clinic for more information.
